The Goldfincher’s Crossbreeding – European Goldfinch x Canary

It’s popular crossbreeding in Europe, usually it’s most common between finches breeders and canaries lovers.
This crossbreeding creation’s principal purpose is to create a perfect singer, with the canary’s vocal power and goldfinch’s melody.

Usually to get this result it needs crossbreed a male goldfinch with a female canary.

Some breeders prefer the opposite crossbreed, more difficult to realize, the resulting hybrid will have the female canary’s silhouette and the male goldfinch’s vocal system, the final look may be illusory for an inexperienced eye, the result will be a very good singer goldfinch.

In both crossbreeding males and females children will be NOT fertile.

Females hybrids can’t sing at all and are not fertile, but they can be used as very good nurses.

Usually copulation will happens from half April to July (in natural light condition), so the reproducers must be raedy, in fact goldfinchers goes on heat a month later then canarys.

Tip: In case of male goldfinch with a female canary, is possible let her to brood on not fertile hatch until the natural leaving of nest by the female. So we can take off the nest, and replace after a week again along male golfincher.

This problem don’t verify in the opposite case and it’s possible join the couple directly when female golfincher just starts build new nest.

There are many thing to say about this subject, I postpone them to next post!!!

Any questions? Leave a comment!

  2. Hi Kingkhan,
The fact is not working can depends from may factors, first of all, what kind of coule you merged? Goldfinch male and canary female? or the opposite? if is the opposite, then could be more difficult.

  4. Hi Rio,
I'm sorry, is almost impossible that is fertile... I mean chance that is fertile are under 20%... try with a "sure" female canary.

    1. Hi Denise,
About the fact they can see each other, is perfect, continue in this way.
In order to get a successful cross breed you need to reach 14 or more hours of light, that's because the male goldfinch requires more hours than female canary.
If you just continue in feeding proteins will not reach the goal.
      I hope my advices helps.

  8. Hi Nick, thanks for the reply, i have been giving the light also for about 3 weeks, i am using the full spectrum lighting for about 14 to 15hrs for the goldfinch male and the female get about 12hrs. Also is it wise to continue feeding the protein daily?

    thanks

    1. Hi Denise,
I hope you placed both in the same cage since 3 weeks too.
Keep the light to 15 hours for both.
Continue for another week, meanwhile, provide a nest to the female, and check the male's beak, should be whitening, with veeery light sign of pencil, male should also sing...
If it's so, then wait for hen preparing the nest and remove separator.
Let me know how is going.
      Good luck!

    2. Hi Nick, yes they are in the same cage with the divider. The male beak is white but the female is not building the nest yet. So I guess some more waiting. :)
      Thanks

    3. Strange the goldfinch is ready and she doesn't, it means also less calcium & proteins in diet. Please feed her with more eggfood and also give cuttlebone.
If you have some vitamin E would helps.
      Good Luck!

    1. If both have been feeded with same meals, then the problem is THE LIGHT!!!
Separe them, let hatch the empty eggs to the canary for 28 days (in total, so other 16...), after wait 12-15 days...I know, patience is required, it's the nature... Meanwhile increase the light till 15 hours, IT'S FUNDAMENTAL!
Keep them separate, but in the same cage, so that they can see each other.
Be patient, go on feeding proteine and calcium.
Pay attention to the goldfinch's peak, has to became white.

Let me know how evolves, be patient, big patience gives big results.

      Best regards,
      Nick

  13. How essential it is to boy finch to sing for some reason he doesn't.. he eats a lot of broccoli and boiled eggs that I managde to teach him with niger seeds.....sun light he gets alot (we are in Greece) as you have mentioned before finch reaches his heat later than the canary, my girl canary is sitting on her second 5egg hatch, but I believe all gonna be empty. So I should separate them now with divider.....I have a good singer boy in the outside cage should I just change him (It probably needs his time to settle in the smaller cage...so not wise I guess?) I don't know what to do at this point and don't wanna exhaust my canary girl making eggs like a chicken XD for nothing. To describe my finch boy his wings are some days down and somedays come up again, as white as the peak can get and the legs are pale as well. Thanks for giving people good tips.

    1. Hi Maggonen,

excuse me for late reply, so... there is a main point you should know, females of canary and european goldfinch DO NOT reach the sexual maturity at the same time!
1th, european goldfinch needs typically 12 months integers and not 11 like canaries...
2nd, they need more hour of sun! 15 istead of 14.
All this situation translate in the fact that narurally, they can be crossed starting from May.
Typically breeders that like to make create mules delay female from starting reproductive season keeping low the hours of lights.

I hope have been clear and it helps.

      Have a nice day :)
